Message from Honourable Secretary (Chemicals & Fertilizers)

Shri Rajat Kumar Mishra -

Secretary Department of Fertilizers, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers

Dear Readers,

The Government of India and the Department of Fertilizers, has made comprehensive arrangements to ensure a successful Kharif season 2026. The Kharif season, commencing with the arrival of the south-west monsoon in the month of June and continuing until September–October, during this season that sowing of major crops such as paddy, pulses, oilseeds, cotton, sugarcane, cereals etc. are undertaken across the country, largely dependent on monsoon rainfall. The Government accords highest priority to the successful conduct of Kharif operations.

Many proactive steps have been taken well in advance of Kharif 2026 to ensure adequate and timely availability of all critical agricultural inputs. The Department of Fertilizers, in close coordination with States has finalized month-wise demand and supply plans for Urea, Buffer stocks have been strategically positioned across the country to meet peak-season requirements and to address any regional exigencies. The revival of domestic urea units under Atmanirbhar Bharat has further strengthened self-reliance, reducing import dependency for the ensuing season.

The Government of India continues to provide substantial subsidy support under the Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) Policy and Urea Subsidy Scheme for Kharif season 2026. This ensures that fertilizers remain available to farmers at affordable prices, thereby safeguarding farm incomes and encouraging timely sowing operations. In Kharif season, special emphasis is being laid on promoting balanced and integrated nutrient management. States are being encouraged under the PM-PRANAM scheme to adopt eco-friendly practices and reduce excessive use of chemical fertilizers. The availability of Nano Urea and Nano DAP is being scaled up significantly, with widespread demonstrations and farmer training programmes. These innovative fertilizers will enhance nutrient use efficiency, lower input costs, and contribute to soil health restoration.

The Government of India remains committed to ensuring that Kharif season 2026 witnesses record production of food grains with assured input availability, continued subsidy support, and promotion of sustainable practices, the season is poised to further strengthen national food security and enhance farmers prosperity.

Sincerely,
Secretary, Department of Fertilizers
